Statement by His Excellency Dr. Mahmoud Vazei, Minister of Communications and Information Technology at the meeting of "Connect Asia -Pacific Summit
Honorable Ministers, Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen

I offer my sympathies and condolences to the people and government of the Philippines for their losses caused by the recent super-typhoon. Allow me also to thank the people and the government of the Kingdom of Thailand for hosting this important event and for their kind hospitality. It is indeed most fitting for Thailand to join hands with the ITU to bring together ICT leaders and stakeholders to foster a vision of empowerment to achieve inclusive sustainable development goals. In today's world, such a vision cannot even be imagined without the pivotal role of the ICT. The real challenge, however, is the existing disparity and the digital gap that divides nations in a manner that impedes human dignity. We also believe that ignoring cultural values leads to alienation of the very same people whose well being and prosperity were to be furthered via ICT development.
Honorable Ministers:
While we are delighted that our region hosts some of the most advanced economies and affluent societies, in line with the Leaders' Vision, we believe that specific and meaningful measures of solidarity and assistance are urgently needed for least developed countries in our region.
We fully recognize the key role that ICT plays in the sustainable development of nations. Our development policies, which emphasize ICT broadband, are in line with the Leaders' Vision as stated in this Summit's Communiqué. In doing so, our emphasis is to expand indigenous capabilities through innovative public-private partnerships.
Distinguished Delegates:
We are committed to encourage establishment of partnerships for ultra broadband corridors across Iran to facilitate East-West and South-North international connections to complement existing facilities. I invite all interested parties to become partners in such projects. This is in line with the spirit of Connect Asia-Pacific Summit.
In all of the above, the global and regional roles of ITU, APT, and other institutions in taking bold initiatives are indispensible. I look forward to witnessing the results of partnersh ips that are initiated in this Summit.

I thank you for your attention.
