The Minister of Information and Communication Technology Seyed Sattar Hashemi called for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to address the deliberate targeting of Iran’s civilian infrastructure by the Israeli-US air raids.
He made the statement in an online
meeting with the Brazilian Minister of Communications Frederico de Siqueira
Filho on Thursday, during which they agreed that the ITU must act
professionally and avoid political pressures.
Hashemi stressed safeguarding ITU’s
specialized mission and added: ITU must act within the framework of its
technical and specialized mission and prevent political approaches from
entering this institution.
The Iranian minister condemned the
attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure including the ICT facilities stressing
that ICT must address these violations of international law and hold the preparators
accountable.
"The US-Israel aggression resulted
in the martyrdom of a number of officials and civilians, including students of
Minab School, and inflicted significant damages on the country's peaceful
communication infrastructure."
Hashemi called for following up on this
issue by the ITU’s ongoing council meeting in Switzerland.
The annual meeting of the ITU Council,
the governing body of the UN specialized agency of telecommunications, convenes
on 28 April - 8 May 2026 in Geneva.
Hashemi held separate telephone calls on
Tuesday and Wednesday with Bosun Tijani, the Chairman of the ITU Council 2026, as well as his Cuban, Malaysian and Turkish counterparts, during which he called for
raising intentional targeting of Iran’s ICT facilities at the ITU Council’s
meeting.
On his part, the Brazilian minister expressed
regret over the recent attacks against Iran and emphasized his country's policy of supporting peace and developing international cooperation.
Filho also supported the examination of
specialized issues in a technical framework and away from political
considerations at the ITU meeting in Geneva.
He invited Iran's ICT Minister to pay a visit to Brazil to promote bilateral cooperation in the field of ICT.
