The Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology Seyed Sattar Hashemi on Tuesday called for the UN’s specialized body for telecommunications to condemn the Israeli-US attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure.
He made the statement in an online meeting with the Malaysian
Minister of Communications Ahmad Fahmi Fadzil during which they also exchanged
views on bilateral ties and the agenda of the meeting of International Telecommunication
Union.
The annual meeting of the ITU Council, the governing body of
the UN specialized agency of telecommunications, convenes on 28 April- 8 May
2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Hashemi slammed the illegitimate aggression of the US and
Israel against Iran and stated: “Iran was invaded by aggressors. Based on
Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, we have exercised our right to
self-defense."
He praised the Iranian war martyrs including officials,
commanders, and civilians notably the slain students of Minab school bombed by the
US and said: Attacking civilian communication infrastructure is a blatant violation
of international law and must be condemned by the ITU Council.
The ICT Minister also reiterated safeguarding the technical,
specialized and non-political nature of the ITU Council, stating: “Members of
the Council must prevent political intentions from this international
institution.”
The Malaysian
minister for his part condemned the US-Israeli attacks against Iran.
“Malaysia has
condemned these acts without hesitation since the first days of the war and stands
with the government and people of Iran,” he said.
Hashemi invited Fadzil to visit Iran to review development of
mutual cooperation in the field of ICT.
