The Minister of Information and Communications Technology Seyed Sattar Hashemi called for raising the issue of bombing Iran’s ICT infrastructure by the Israeli-US attacks at the meeting of International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
In a telephone contact with Bosun Tijani, the Chairman
of the ITU Council 2026 on Tuesday, Hashemi called for condemning the
intentional targeting of Iran’s ICT facilities at the ITU Council’s meeting.
The annual meeting of the ITU Council, the governing body of
the UN specialized agency of telecommunications, convenes on 28 April- 8 May
2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Hashemi and Tiajni exchanged views on the agenda of the ITU meeting
during which the Iranian ICT Minister slammed the US-Israeli imposed war on the
Iranian nation.
"These acts, which led to the martyrdom of a number of
officials, commanders and civilians, are a clear violation of international law,”
he stated.
He pointed out the destruction of civilian communication
infrastructure and said: "The
official protest of the Islamic Republic of Iran against these attacks has been
conveyed to the ITU Council."
Referring to Tehran's self-defense under Article 51 of the
United Nations Charter, the ICT Minister added: "The claims made by certain
regional countries about Iran's attack on civilian communication infrastructure
are unfounded.”
He recalled the US bombing of the Shajareh Tayebeh school in
Minab in southern Iran on the first day of war on February 28 and the martyrdom
of 168 children, stating “this crime shall be condemned strongly by the international
bodies.”
Tijani -- the ITU council’s chairman and the Nigerian Minister
of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy -- expressed his condolences
and regrets over the attacks carried out against Iranian civilian citizens and
facilities.
