World Space Week 2015

World Space Week 2015
The World Space Week Association (WSW) selects “Discovery” as the theme for World Space Week 2015.

According to ICT’s PR Center, since the United Nations declaration in 1999, which announced October 4 to 10 as the ‘World Space Week’, this occasion has grown into the largest public space event on Earth.

Based on this report, each year, hundreds of volunteers join an international celebration of science and technology consisting of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetariums, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe to provide unique leverage in space outreach and education, educate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space, encourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development, demonstrate public support for space programs, excite young people about science, technology, engineering, and math, and foster international cooperation in space outreach and education. Thus, hundreds of thousands of children, young students, and adults learn about the benefits of space in the life of the human race. Last year, more than 1600 events were held around the globe, including Iran.

By choosing the ‘Discovery’ theme for the World Space Week, explorations out of the boundaries of the solar system which result in acquiring more knowledge about the universe, get the main focus. The theme is greatly inspired by missions like GAIA, Rosetta, Kepler and Hubble, enhancing our knowledge of our solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, comets, exoplanets and galaxies far away.

The official World Space Week 2015 poster was subject to a poster design competition among space artists. The winner of this year’s World Space Week 2015 poster was a Romanian space artist by the name of Alec Bartos. His design with the explorer’s foot prints over the Milky Way perfectly reflects the spirit of “Discovery”, as humankind slowly ventures further into deep space to discover more and more secrets of the universe.
